Default Would you still be playing if.....

Would you still be playing if this game carried a monthly fee?

I still think there are fun parts to this game but not $10+/month fun. Everyone has a different idea of fun and chances are, there has been an update that has either increased or decreased your definition of fun. For me, most have decreased my enjoyment. I still play because I can still find ways to make the game fun but I doubt I would pay for the privilege to do so.

To that end, does that define Guild Wars as a second-tier game? Does it deserve a lesser standard to judge it by because they don't charge a monthly fee? The game only has to be "free fun" instead of "I'd pay a monthly fee to have that kind of fun".

Are gamers starting to operate under the "I play because I can" philosophy instead of "I play because I really want to" one? This raises another question. For pay-to-play games, do people eventually operate under the "I play because I have to justify the cost" as opposed to "I play because I'm really having fun". I imagine very few exist in the first camp because they could easily quit unless some they'll really enjoy is still yet to come....but in the near future.

Just throwing a few questions out there....

Probably not. But, that's more due to a wife that wouldn't understand the monthly charges for a game...

Erm no, it doesn't have enough content to warrent a monthly. You may pay for a month or two, but then you will have seen and done everything. So a big fat no.
As for monthly fee stopping immature players... dream on.

I've gotta say, I've heard that argument before, and I find wealth uncorrelated to maturity. I say this as I know a large number of wealthy jerks. I also have played games with a monthly fee, and I can assure you that immature idiots still exist (and IMO roughly the same % of the population too).

I feel your pain, and share it. Every now and then I'll get the old "I hate that game" speech, regardless of what it is. I save playtime until the kids are asleep and she's settled down to something else, but still... a monthly fee would not fly well.

Yeah same for me. GW caught my eye because of the "No Monthy Fee" label on it and that suits the wife just fine. She and I are on a budget though sure $10 a month might not be a big deal to some but for me, I like to just pick up a game any time I want and play it. To have a fee that I would have to pay just to play a game on a whim would really suck. Its kinda the main reason why I NEVER once tried EQ...

LOL! I have heard that speech so many times it's rediculous. It's either that or, "come here, we need to talk about something" just as I've gotten in to an FoW or UW group. Yeah, try explaining how a bunch of people from all over the country are going to give your "made-up" character a bad reputation in a world that doesn't really exist. I digress. Although recently, I have discovered that addictive TV series and NetFlix work very well together..... mmmhhhmm, solid hour of playtime for me!

Ha! Why is it that the whole day can go by, but the moment I start something (not even while in town, but actually in combat), she wants to talk and gets irked that I'm ignoring her? At least she falls asleep a lot earlier than I do. She also doesn't understand that, being guys, we tend to focus harder on what we're doing and multitask (i.e. have a meaningful conversation while battling monsters) poorly?

I wouldn't be able to afford the monthly fee.

Plus then I'd feel pressured to play a lot because it's like I'm paying for it monthly which might mean that I play it all the time and that my grades begin to slip.

So in conclusion, I'd stop playing if the game had a monthly fee.

I agree completely. It's not a matter of how good Guild Wars is, because I simply wouldn't pay a monthly fee for any game.
